One Million Community Health Workers

The mission of the One Million Community Health Workers (1mCHW) Campaign is to accelerate the attainment of universal health coverage in rural sub-Saharan Africa by supporting governments, international partners, UN agencies, and national stakeholders dedicated to community health worker scale-up in the context of health systems strengthening.

We are pleased to have you visit our website. This site handles about 90% of its information on one million community health workers campaign, Ghana.

In 2013, the Ministry of Health (MOH) and Ghana Health Service (GHS) partnered with the 1mCHW Campaign to strengthen Ghana’s existing Community-based Health Promotion and Services (CHPS) program through the introduction of a formal cadre of CHWs. In 2014, the MOH, GHS, and 1mCHW Campaign finalized an operational Roadmap, which defines the goals, responsibilities, and phased scaleup strategy for rolling out the CHW Program in Ghana. In 2015, through collaborative effort six districts in the Ashanti Region were identified to begin the initial roll-out of the CHW Program: 1) Amansie West, 2) Bosome Freho, 3) Sekyere Kumawu, 4) Sekyere Central, 5) Amansie Central, and 6) Ejura Sekyereduamasi. The GHS, in partnership with qualified non-governmental organizations (NGOs), trained and deployed 1,000 CHWs in 2015 to cover a total population of approximately 564,658 people. The programs were rigorously monitored and evaluated to inform national scale-up. As pioneered in Guinea and the two MVP sites in Ghana, CHWs and CHOs were deployed with mobile phones to support real-time data collection, health service delivery, and supervision. This state of the art mHealth system has improved point of care decision-making, performance monitoring, and disease surveillance, and inform managers on the health and human resource needs.
